Applies to Provance ITAM databases on SQL Server 2008 R2 and above.

The Provance database installed by Provance ITAM 2014/2016 by default is installed with a Recovery Mode of Full. The effect of this is that the Provance Transaction Log file potentially will grow significantly. Because the role of the Provance database is to provide configuration information and facilitate processes, there is greater justification to set the Recovery Mode to Simple as the Provance database can be reconstructed easily from information in the Service Manager database.

Resolution:

Changing the Database to Simple Recovery Mode

Navigating in the SQL Server Management Console:

  1. Right clicking on the database to be changed.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Select Options.
  4. Change the Recovery Mode pulldown to Simple.
  5. Click Ok.

Shrinking the Transaction Log file

Once the Recovery Mode has been set to Simple, in order to reclaim the disk space consumed by the growing Transaction Log file it will be necessary to shrink the log file.

Navigating in the SQL Server Management Console:

  1. Right clicking on the database to be changed.
  2. Select Tasks/Shrink/Files.
  3. Change the File Type to Log.
  4. Ensure that the appropriate log file is entered in the Location field.
  5. Ensure that Release unused space is selected.
  6. Click OK.
